Digital Subak

Currently, based in Bali, I am pursuing a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University in Denpasar. My research, titled "Digital Subak," explores the existing gaps in knowledge and management of Bali's water resources.

The traditional Subak system—an ancient network of canals and temples designed to distribute water for agriculture—has long sustained the island's communities. However, with rapid economic growth, land-use change, and population pressure, the role of Subak has significantly weakened. As a result, Bali now faces recurring droughts and floods caused by poor water resource management.

To address this challenge, I propose developing a network of IoT-based sensors that will provide both real-time and historical insights into the island's hydrology—measuring everything from rainfall and rivers to groundwater, aquifers, and coastal waters. This digital framework aims to bring transparency, resilience, and collaboration back into Bali's water governance.
